The new president has nominated a number of persons for new cabinet positions, department and agency heads, and others. We soon expect him to nominate a justice to the United States Supreme Court to fill the vacancy left upon the death of Justice Antonin Scalia.
If you choose to write this extra credit paper (up to 10 points of extra credit), you are expected to follow the senate confirmation hearings (or simply media/YouTube excerpts) and report your findings in 3 – 5 pages, including historical context, conflicts of interest (if any), judicial competence, the nominee’s record on various issues, the Democrats’ objections and their efforts (if any) to reject the nominee, and the long-term political implications of this process.
